Arbor Day
The City of Melbourne celebrates Arbor Day on the third Friday in January. The ceremony is organized by the City's Beautification and Environmental Advisory Committee. The Arbor Day observance is one of the activities that has allowed Melbourne to be a Tree City USA, an urban forestry designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Free tree seedlings are available for people who attend the Arbor Day ceremony, which is usually held in a City park. A ceremonial tree is planted, and in 2012 an additional tree was planted by the Melbourne Garden Club in memory of Mary Nemeth, who served as president of the organization.

Winter is the ideal time to plant trees in Florida, allowing development of a root system ahead of hot weather.
The VALUE OF TREES was the topic for the 2012 Arbor Day ceremony, with a ceremonial planting at Wells Park by (from left), Ronald Strandjord, City Manager Jack Schluckebier, Council Member Mark LaRusso, Vice Mayor Mike Nowlin, Council Member Kathy Meehan, and Celeste Henry, vice chair of the committee hosting the event. Mr. Strandjord also serves on the committee.
