Melbourne Police Department Explorers

Explorers are volunteer civilian students, ranging in age from 14 to 20 years, with an interest in a law enforcement career. The Explorer post is part of the Boys Scouts of America program.

Explorers meet at the Melbourne Police Department, and have the opportunity to experience what it might be like to be a law enforcement officer. Explorers can work towards earning rank within the post as they plan and implement community service projects and help the Department's sworn officers with daily assignments. Explorers do not have the law enforcement authority of sworn officers.

Explorers are assigned to work one-to-one with a sworn officer, conducting assigned duties. After proper instruction, training, and exams, they may complete daily worksheets, handle radio communications, write booking forms on arrested defendants, direct traffic, assist with phone calls, or participate in a Field Training program similar to that in which sworn officers participate.

In 2005, our Explorers competed in the Florida Association of Police Explorers (FAPE) State competition, earning 4th place in the drill competition.

Explorers Annual State Competition

The Police Explorers attended the Florida Association of Police Explorers Annual State Competition in Venice, Florida from June 11, 2006 through June 17, 2006.  During that time, they competed in scenario-based competitive exercises including traffic stops, traffic crash investigation, crisis intervention, first aid, armed robbery in-progress, crime scene investigation, drill team, color guard, a physical obstacle course, and a police bicycle obstacle course.

This year the Explorers competed with 39 other Explorer posts from around the state, taking a 3rd place win for color guard - Melbourne’s first color guard victory.   Melbourne Police Department Officers Mike Loftis and Jennifer Hall competed in the police bicycle obstacle course for the male and female post advisors.  Both officers brought home 1st place medals for these categories in this event.

The Explorers and advisors completed more than 200 hours of training in order to prepare for 2006 competition.  This total does not include additional community service events performed by the Explorers, and the other events they attended for training during this time.  Officers from the Melbourne Police Department, Sebastian Police Department, and the Florida Highway Patrol worked diligently helping the Explorers train for all of the necessary events so that they would perform to the best of their ability.
