MPD S.W.A.T.

At its most basic level, a SWAT team exists to save lives. The Melbourne Police Department SWAT team is on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to provide assistance to every division, section, or unit within our Department.  The team also receives requests from outside agencies to assist them with critical incidents.  There is a trust level between SWAT members not only within the Department but also with surrounding agencies.  Lives depend on it.

Our SWAT responds to incidents that include, but are not limited to, barricaded suspects, hostage situations, service of high-risk search warrants and arrest warrants, apprehension of armed and dangerous fugitives, civil disorder, and dignitary protection.

SWAT applicants undergo rigorous selection and training.  Emphasis is placed on physical fitness so an officer will be able to withstand the rigors of deployment and engagement in the field.  Our SWAT assists Patrol in specific circumstances that require highly trained and specially equipped officers, and they also participate in regional competitions.  SWAT trains together on a frequent and regular basis to ensure that officers never doubt each other, their abilities, their decisions, or themselves.
